Learning from State Action on Climate Change Some of the most significant actions taken to address climate change in the U.S. have been undertaken by states and cities. Thirty-six states have climate change action plans completed or in development, and seventeen states have statewide emission targets.
Mayors Climate Protection Center As of August 2008, 850 cities had signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, in which they agree to strive to meet greenhouse gas emission reduction goals set forth in the Kyoto Protocol (7 percent below 1990 levels by 2012).
U.S. State and Regional Programs States and regions across the country are adopting climate policies, including the development of regional greenhouse gas reduction markets, the creation of state and local climate action and adaptation plans, and increasing renewable energy generation.
