Urban Environmental Management defines sustainable tourism as "an industry which attempts to make a low impact on the environment and local culture, while helping to generate income, employment, and the conservation of local ecosystems. It is responsible tourism that is both ecologically and culturally sensitive." Sustainable travel lies equally in the hands of the individual and the organization. Both must seek a balance between the common good and personal gain, be it enrichment of travel experiences or financial portfolios. The movement toward sustainable travel and tourism has involved a world-wide search for both theoretical and practical approaches, focusing on policies and practices that address a wide range of needs from the local economy to the industry to government. These policies and practices, however, must include accountability and assessment measures and tools to ensure their appropriate and effective application.
